Anne Boleyn Costume

Anne Boleyn is one of the most fascinating women of the Tudor period. She became the second wife of Henry VIII and Queen of England in 1533, but her brief reign ended dramatically with her execution in 1536.

Today, Anne Boleyn is one of the most recognisable Tudor figures, helped by countless books, films and television dramas. Her distinctive French-inspired gowns, elaborate Tudor headwear and famous jewellery make her an especially good choice for Halloween, historical costume events, Renaissance fairs and Tudor-themed cosplay.

For a more theatrical interpretation, the famous story of Anne Boleyn also gives you plenty of scope for a slightly mysterious Halloween costume – particularly if you're looking for something more sophisticated than a standard witch or vampire.

Get into character: Bring Anne Boleyn to Life

Tudor fashion, famous jewellery and a few words fit for the Queen

Anne Boleyn's appearance was carefully observed by contemporaries and later transformed by generations of artists and storytellers. Some details of the modern image of Anne are therefore much less certain than they appear.

A few things to know about Anne Boleyn

  • Anne spent part of her youth at the European courts of Margaret of Austria and France, and her style was influenced by continental fashions.
  • She became Queen of England in 1533, after Henry VIII's marriage to Catherine of Aragon was annulled.
  • Anne was the mother of Elizabeth I, who would later become one of England's most celebrated monarchs.
  • Her famous B necklace is often associated with her, although surviving evidence about the jewellery she actually wore is limited.
  • The image of Anne wearing a distinctive French hood is strongly associated with her, although Tudor women's headwear was varied and changed over time.
  • Anne was executed at the Tower of London in 1536 after being accused of treason and other offences. The historical circumstances surrounding her downfall remain the subject of considerable scholarly discussion.

Playing the part

Intelligent, ambitious and poised, Anne Boleyn was a woman who knew how to hold her own at the Tudor court. Play her with confidence and a touch of mystery. She doesn't need to be the loudest person in the room to make sure everyone notices her.

Finishing touches that elevate the look

  • A French hood is probably the single most recognisable accessory.
  • Long Tudor sleeves, a square neckline and rich fabrics create a convincing silhouette.
  • Pearls are particularly useful for recreating the Tudor court look.
  • A small pendant or initial necklace can provide a nod to Anne without relying on modern reproductions of the famous "B" necklace.
  • For Halloween, a dark Tudor gown, pale makeup and a suitably dramatic expression can give the costume a subtle ghost-story quality without turning Anne into a generic medieval ghost.

Anne Boleyn is particularly good for anyone who wants a costume that looks beautiful at first glance but has a rather darker story underneath.
