Robin Hood Costume

Robin Hood

Robin Hood is one of the most famous figures of the Middle Ages – the legendary outlaw of Sherwood Forest who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor. Whether he was a real historical character or a figure assembled from centuries of folklore is still debated, but his story has become one of the great legends of English history.

From medieval ballads to classic Hollywood films, Disney and countless modern films and TV shows, Robin Hood has been reinvented time and again. His instantly recognisable green tunic, hood, boots and trusty bow make him a natural choice for Halloween, cosplay, Renaissance fairs and medieval-themed parties.

Whether you want a traditional medieval outlaw or a more polished Hollywood version, Robin Hood is a costume with plenty of room for interpretation – and one that works just as well for children as it does for adults.

Get into character: Bring Robin Hood to Life

Sherwood Forest, medieval folklore and a few tips for playing the part

Robin Hood has been portrayed in so many different ways that you can have a lot of fun deciding which version you want to be.

A few things to know about Robin Hood

  • The earliest surviving references to Robin Hood date from medieval England, although the familiar story developed considerably over the centuries.
  • Sherwood Forest and Nottingham are strongly associated with the legend, even though different medieval versions of the story place Robin Hood in different settings.
  • The famous idea that Robin Hood was an expert archer became an essential part of the legend.
  • Robin is traditionally accompanied by the Merry Men, including Little John and Friar Tuck, while Maid Marian became an important part of the story in later versions.
  • The green outfit is now almost inseparable from the character, although medieval people did not necessarily dress in the vivid green costumes seen in modern films.

Playing the part

Brave, confident and quick-witted, Robin Hood is a natural leader with a strong sense of justice. He's comfortable taking risks and has a certain charm that makes people want to follow him. A little swagger wouldn't go amiss, either.

Finishing touches that elevate the look

  • A hood, leather belt and tall boots immediately make the character recognisable.
  • A quiver and bow complete the classic outlaw look – though for parties and conventions, a safe costume prop is obviously preferable to anything capable of firing an arrow.
  • For a more historical appearance, choose natural-looking fabrics and muted greens, browns and earthy colours rather than bright theatrical green.
  • Travelling with Friar Tuck, Little John or Maid Marian turns a Robin Hood costume into a whole group of Merry Men.

Whether you're heading for Halloween, a Renaissance fair or a cosplay convention, Robin Hood is one of those costumes where the character does much of the work for you.
