Henry VIII Costume
Henry VIII was one of England's most famous – and most flamboyant – kings. He ruled from 1509 until his death in 1547 and is remembered for his six wives, his break with Rome and the English Reformation, as well as his enormous appetite for food, clothes and royal ceremony.
Luckily, you don't need six wives to pull off the costume. A magnificent Tudor robe, fur-trimmed coat, broad belt and impressive beard will get you most of the way there. Add a crown and a suitably commanding expression and you have an instantly recognisable character for Halloween, Tudor events, Renaissance fairs, costume parties and historical cosplay.
And if you're looking for a costume with a little more grandeur than the average Halloween outfit, Henry VIII is hard to beat.

Tudor facts, royal habits and a few things to say from the throne
Henry VIII was very conscious of his image. Portraits were an important part of Tudor royal propaganda, and the famous paintings by Hans Holbein the Younger helped establish the powerful, broad-shouldered image of the king we still recognise today.
A few Tudor facts to remember
- Henry VIII became king in 1509, when he was just 17 years old.
- He married six times, although only two of his wives were executed.
- His break with the authority of the Pope eventually led to the establishment of the Church of England under royal authority.
- Henry was a keen sportsman in his younger years and particularly enjoyed jousting.
- His famous Holbein portraits were carefully constructed images of royal power – every detail of his clothing and posture was significant.
- Tudor clothing was a very visible indication of status. Rich fabrics, fur, embroidery and elaborate sleeves were ways of displaying wealth.
Playing the part
Commanding, extravagant and accustomed to getting his own way, Henry VIII is very much the centre of attention. He enjoys fine clothes, elaborate ceremonies, good food and being treated like a king. Walk into the room as though everyone was waiting for you to arrive.
Finishing touches that elevate the look
- The beard is essential. Henry's broad, pointed beard is almost as recognisable as his crown.
- Look for a wide belt, heavy-looking fabrics, fur trim and rich colours.
- A large Tudor-style medallion or chain makes a surprisingly effective addition.
- For a more historically convincing costume, avoid the temptation to pile on too many crowns and royal symbols. Henry's clothing itself did much of the talking.
- For a humorous Halloween version, a prop turkey leg or goblet can push the larger-than-life Tudor king idea a little further.
For maximum effect, walk slowly, look imperious and remember that absolutely everyone in the room is expected to know that you are the king.
