Colourful, mischievous and impossible to ignore, the medieval jester has become one of the most recognisable figures of the Middle Ages. Royal and noble households employed entertainers who could sing, tell stories, perform tricks and make jokes at the expense of just about everyone, including the people at the top.

The familiar jester's cap with bells is now almost shorthand for the character. Add a brightly coloured tunic, tights or trousers, pointed shoes and a few bells, and you're ready for the medieval equivalent of being the life and soul of the party.

A few things to know

Not every medieval jester dressed in the spectacular patchwork costume we associate with the character today. Court entertainers came in many forms, and their talents could include music, storytelling, acrobatics and comedy.

Their position could also give them unusual freedom to mock powerful people. A joke from a jester could sometimes say what nobody else dared to say.

Playing the part

The jester is probably the easiest medieval character to have fun with. Be playful, a little unpredictable and ready with a ridiculous observation.

At a party, announce yourself as the royal entertainer and insist on knowing whether everyone is enjoying themselves. If they aren't, blame the king.

Don't overdo the manic laughter, though. A good jester is mischievous rather than simply noisy.

Finishing touches that elevate the look

Look for strong contrasting colours, bells, stripes, diamonds and exaggerated shapes. A cap with bells instantly establishes the character, while a small pouch, wooden sceptre or harmless prop adds another layer.
