Guinevere

Queen Guinevere is one of the great women of Arthurian legend, although exactly who she was depends very much on which version of the story you're reading. She appears in medieval romances as King Arthur's queen and is central to the stories surrounding Arthur, Lancelot and the Knights of the Round Table.

That gives you plenty of scope for a costume. Think rich medieval fabrics, a long dress, a cloak and jewellery rather than the rather restrictive idea of a princess costume. Guinevere should look like a queen.

A few things to know

Guinevere appears in several different Arthurian traditions, and her story developed over centuries. In many of the best-known versions she is Arthur's queen and becomes involved in the tragic love story between herself and Sir Lancelot.

She isn't simply a damsel waiting to be rescued. As queen, she belongs at the centre of the court and the complicated politics surrounding Arthur's kingdom.

Playing the part

Carry yourself as though you've just entered a room full of knights who are waiting for your opinion.

Guinevere doesn't need to be played as permanently tragic, either. At a Halloween party, practise looking politely unimpressed when somebody tells you that they've found the Holy Grail. You are the queen, after all.

And if two knights start arguing over you, send them both to the Round Table and carry on with your evening.

Finishing touches that elevate the look

Choose a long medieval-style gown in a rich colour, with a cloak, belt or embroidered details. A simple circlet or medieval-inspired headpiece gives the costume its royal finish without turning it into a generic fairy-tale princess outfit.

Jewellery, a pendant or an ornate brooch can add just enough detail to suggest wealth and status. Think queen of Camelot rather than Disney princess.
